He probably would have been a good employee. He doesn't put up with bullshit. If you've been doing development (especially at larger companies) for years, you understand that coding is the least important part. That's the part you focus on after you deflect all the stupid bullshit from managers/product managers/ops. Senior members of the team should be able to influence others to get behind them and make good use of time. Coding is incidental.
